The Radiation Oncologist’s Role in Improving Outcomes for Patients with High-Risk cSCC

PROGRAM CHAIR

Nikhil I. Khushalani, MD
Senior Member and Vice-Chair
Department of Cutaneous Oncology
H. Lee Moffitt Cancer Center
Tampa, Florida

PROGRAM OVERVIEW

Cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma (cSCC) is one of the most common skin cancers. Most cases can be successfully managed with surgery and other local therapies, but patients with high-risk disease face an increased risk of recurrence, progression, and metastasis. Management of high-risk cSCC often requires multidisciplinary care, with radiation oncology playing an important role in definitive and postoperative treatment. As immunotherapy becomes increasingly integrated into the treatment landscape, radiation oncology clinicians must be prepared to identify patients at high risk for poor outcomes and determine how best to sequence and combine radiation therapy with systemic treatment. In this program, clinicians will learn to apply evidence-based clinical criteria to identify patients with high-risk cSCC and guide treatment decisions; evaluate clinical evidence supporting the sequencing and integration of neoadjuvant immunotherapy with radiation to inform individualized treatment planning; and implement evidence-based strategies for integrating adjuvant immunotherapy with postoperative radiation to improve disease control and prevent progression.

TARGET AUDIENCE

This activity is intended for radiation oncologists and their associated care teams involved in the multidisciplinary management of patients with cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma (cSCC).

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

Upon the completion of this program, attendees should be able to:

  • Utilize evidence-based clinical criteria to identify patients with high-risk cSCC and guide treatment decisions that improve disease control and prevent progression.
  • Apply clinical evidence supporting the sequencing and integration of neoadjuvant immunotherapy with radiation in high-risk cSCC to inform individualized treatment planning.
  • Implement evidence-based strategies for integrating adjuvant immunotherapy with postoperative radiation in high-risk cSCC.
