PROGRAM OVERVIEW
This enduring symposium is designed to enhance the knowledge and clinical competence of optometrists in the diagnosis and management of Demodex blepharitis. Expert faculty will review clinical characteristics, differential diagnosis, and evidence-based treatments, with an emphasis on recognizing pathognomonic signs and distinguishing Demodex blepharitis from other ocular surface conditions. Participants will examine the latest evidence supporting mechanism-directed therapies and explore practical approaches to incorporating pharmacologic treatments, patient counseling, and longitudinal follow-up into clinical practice. Case-based small-group discussions and audience polling will engage learners in applying key concepts to realistic clinical scenarios and addressing common challenges in diagnosis, treatment selection, adherence, and ongoing disease management.
TARGET AUDIENCE
This educational activity will be designed to meet the educational needs of optometrists involved in the diagnosis and management of patients with Demodex blepharitis.
LEARNING OBJECTIVES
Upon the completion of this program, attendees should be able to:
- Differentiate Demodex blepharitis from other ocular surface conditions through targeted history-taking and slit-lamp examination, with emphasis on recognition of pathognomonic signs such as collarettes and characteristic symptom patterns
- Apply evidence-based, mechanism-directed treatment strategies that address underlying mite infestation and support timely, effective resolution of clinical signs and symptoms
- Implement patient-centered counseling and longitudinal management approaches that address symptom burden, functional impairment, treatment adherence, and risk of recurrence to optimize visual outcomes and QoL
