PROGRAM OVERVIEW
This symposium, to be held at AAFP-FMX 2026, is designed for primary care clinicians and focuses on practical strategies for assessing cognitive health, differentiating normal aging from mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and early Alzheimer’s disease (AD), and appropriately incorporating blood-based biomarkers into the evaluation of suspected AD. The session also highlights the importance of brain health and risk reduction across the lifespan, including identification of modifiable risk factors for cognitive decline. This program also features an exciting case-breakout session, which begins with our faculty experts sharing perspectives and content, followed by intimate small-group breakouts facilitated by a moderator. The overall objective is to provide learners with practical skills in educating patients on brain health, interpreting cognitive and biomarker findings, communicating results with patients and care partners, and supporting earlier detection, diagnosis, and patient-centered management of AD in primary care practice.
TARGET AUDIENCE
This activity is designed for healthcare professionals involved in the assessment, diagnosis, and ongoing management of patients across the AD continuum, including primary care clinicians, neurologists, geriatricians, and geriatric psychiatrists.
LEARNING OBJECTIVES
Upon the completion of this program, attendees should be able to:
- Apply evidence-based cognitive health assessment strategies to differentiate normal aging, MCI, and early AD across the disease continuum.
- Integrate blood-based biomarker testing into the diagnostic evaluation of suspected AD using guideline-informed test selection and result interpretation.
- Implement patient-centered communication strategies to discuss cognitive health, diagnostic testing, and risk modification with patients and care partners
