PROGRAM OVERVIEW

This series of TeleECHO meetings is designed to assist ophthalmologists and retina specialists in enhancing the accuracy and timeliness of geographic atrophy (GA) diagnoses. The program aims to streamline referrals for patients who may benefit from GA treatment and improve patient education on GA, including its progression and prognosis. Through in-depth discussions, it will deepen clinicians’ understanding of the complement system’s role in GA pathogenesis and expand their knowledge of novel complement inhibition therapies. Additionally, the program will strengthen familiarity with efficacy and safety data of complement inhibitors, clarify indications, dosing, and adverse events of approved GA treatments, and refine the selection of appropriate patients for complement inhibition therapy.

TARGET AUDIENCE

This activity is designed to educate ophthalmologists and retina specialists who care for patients with geographic atrophy (GA) secondary to age-related macular degeneration (AMD).

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

Upon the completion of this program, attendees should be able to:

  • Interpret diagnostic imaging of GA lesions to identify GA early and its progression to effectively manage or refer patients and collaborate among eye care physicians
  • Compose individualized patient education that ensures a thorough understanding of the disease, its progression, and its prognosis
  • Describe the role of the complement system in the pathogenesis of GA
  • Evaluate current efficacy and safety data that guide the clinical use of complement inhibition therapies for the treatment of GA
  • Identify safety considerations with complement inhibition therapies for the treatment of GA to be able to assess and educate patients with GA on their individual risk-benefit ratio of treatment
